UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus)

UDISE+ is India’s official, national school education data system used for planning, monitoring, and evidence-based decision-making. Under NIPUN Bharat, UDISE+ provides the data backbone to track access, inputs, and system readiness that enable Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) outcomes.

1. WHAT is UDISE+?

UDISE+ (Unified District Information System for Education Plus) is:

  • A web-based Management Information System (MIS) for school education

  • Covering all schools (government, aided, private, recognised and unrecognised)

  • Capturing annual, school-level data on infrastructure, teachers, enrolment, attendance, facilities, and outcomes

It supports micro-level (school), meso-level (district/state), and macro-level (national) analysis.

2. WHY is UDISE+ Important?

a) Evidence-Based Planning

  • Replaces fragmented reporting with standardised, verified data

  • Enables targeted interventions (teachers, classrooms, materials, toilets, drinking water)

b) Accountability and Transparency

  • School-wise data improves visibility and accountability

  • Supports monitoring of schemes and reforms

c) Support to NIPUN Bharat

  • FLN success depends on inputs and readiness (teachers, PTR, classrooms, libraries)

  • UDISE+ identifies gaps that hinder FLN, enabling corrective action

d) Equity and Inclusion

  • Disaggregated data (gender, social categories, location) highlights inequities

  • Informs inclusive planning and resource allocation

3. WHEN was UDISE+ Introduced? (History & Dates)

  • UDISE (original): Initiated in the mid-2000s as a DISE/UDISE framework for school data

  • UDISE+ launched in 2018–19:

    • Introduced by the Government of India as a real-time, online system

    • Added features like school directory management, validation checks, dashboards

  • Post-2020 (NEP 2020):

    • UDISE+ recognised as a core data system for planning and monitoring reforms

  • From 2021 (NIPUN Bharat):

    • Used to track FLN-enabling inputs and system preparedness annually

4. WHO Uses UDISE+?

Data Providers

  • Schools (Head Teachers/Principals) enter and verify data

Data Users

  • States & UTs: Planning, budgeting, deployment

  • Ministry of Education: National monitoring and policy design

  • Academic bodies: Analysis and research

  • Public: Access to published reports and dashboards (aggregated)

5. HOW Does UDISE+ Work?

a) Data Collection

  • Annual online data entry by schools

  • Built-in validation rules reduce errors

b) Data Coverage (Examples)

  • School profile and facilities

  • Teacher strength and qualifications

  • Student enrolment and attendance

  • Infrastructure (classrooms, libraries, ICT)

  • Special provisions (CWSN, transport, hostels)

c) Verification & Publication

  • Multi-level verification (block/district/state)

  • Public release of UDISE+ reports and dashboards

6. Role of UDISE+ in NIPUN Bharat

UDISE+ supports NIPUN Bharat by:

  • Identifying teacher availability and PTR in foundational grades

  • Tracking infrastructure readiness (classrooms, libraries, learning spaces)

  • Monitoring enrolment, attendance, and retention in early grades

  • Informing targeted FLN interventions at district and school levels

Key distinction:

  • UDISE+ tracks inputs and system conditions

  • SBA/HPC track individual child learning

  • NAS tracks system-level learning outcomes

Together, they form a complete monitoring ecosystem.

7. UDISE+ from Multiple Perspectives

Teacher / School Perspective

  • Accurate reporting ensures timely resources and support

  • Data-driven identification of needs

Administrator Perspective

  • Planning teacher deployment, infrastructure upgrades, and budgets

  • Monitoring reform implementation

Policy Perspective

  • Enables evidence-based governance

  • Tracks progress towards NEP 2020 and NIPUN Bharat goals

Examination Perspective

  • Frequently asked in TET, Headmaster, B.Ed., M.Ed.

  • Key points to mention: launch year (2018–19), purpose, linkage with NEP/NIPUN

UDISE+, launched in 2018–19, is India’s national online school education data system that supports evidence-based planning, monitoring, and implementation of reforms such as NEP 2020 and the NIPUN Bharat Mission.

Earth’s Freshwater

Only about 3% of all the water on Earth is freshwater.  The remaining 97% is saltwater, found in oceans and seas. Even within this 3% freshwater: A large portion is frozen in glaciers and ice caps  Some water is stored as groundwater Only a very small amount is available in rivers, lakes, and ponds  This means very little freshwater is easily available for drinking, farming, and daily use. Water on Earth –  Facts About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered with water. Only 3% of Earth’s water is freshwater , and 97% is saltwater . Less than 1% of freshwater is easily available for human use. Most freshwater is locked in glaciers and ice caps . Groundwater is the largest source of usable freshwater for humans. Rivers, lakes, and ponds together hold a very tiny amount of freshwater . Johads in Rajasthan are traditional structures used to store rainwater. Salt pans in Gujarat produce a large amount of India’s salt. The largest ocean on Earth is the Pacific Ocean...
