DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing)

DIKSHA is not only a digital platform but also a major structural reform in India’s teacher education and school education ecosystem. Understanding its history and timeline is important for conceptual clarity, policy understanding, and examination answers.

1. WHAT is DIKSHA? (Brief Recap)

DIKSHA (Digital Infrastructure for Knowledge Sharing) is a national digital platform created to:

  • Support teacher professional development

  • Provide digital teaching–learning resources

  • Enable large-scale, uniform implementation of education reforms

It acts as the digital backbone for initiatives such as NISHTHA, NIPUN Bharat, and NEP 2020.

2. WHY was DIKSHA Introduced? (Historical Background)

Before DIKSHA:

  • Teacher training was:

    • Fragmented

    • Mostly face-to-face

    • Uneven in quality across states

  • Digital resources were scattered and unregulated

  • There was no single national platform for:

    • Teacher learning

    • Sharing best practices

    • Monitoring training at scale

With the rapid expansion of:

  • School education

  • Teacher workforce

  • Digital technology

The Government of India felt the need for a scalable, open, and standardised digital infrastructure.

3. WHEN was DIKSHA Launched? (Important Dates)

🔹 2017 – Launch of DIKSHA

  • DIKSHA was launched in September 2017

  • Launched by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD)
    (now Ministry of Education)

  • Initial focus:

    • Teacher training

    • Digital content sharing

    • Professional development

This marks the formal beginning of DIKSHA as a national platform.

🔹 2018–2019 – Expansion Phase

  • States and Union Territories began:

    • Onboarding teachers

    • Uploading state-specific content

  • DIKSHA evolved into a federated platform, allowing states autonomy while maintaining national standards

  • National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 was announced in July 2020

  • NEP 2020 emphasised:

    • Continuous professional development

    • Technology integration in education

    • Competency-based teaching and assessment

DIKSHA was formally recognised as a key digital enabler for implementing NEP 2020 reforms.

🔹 2021 – DIKSHA and NIPUN Bharat

  • NIPUN Bharat Mission launched in July 2021

  • DIKSHA assigned a central role in:

    • Hosting FLN training modules

    • Supporting NISHTHA–FLN courses

    • Providing FLN-aligned teaching and assessment resources

From this point, DIKSHA became the operational backbone of FLN implementation across the country.

🔹 2021 onwards – QR-coded Textbooks

  • NCERT and State textbooks integrated QR codes

  • QR codes link textbooks directly to:

    • Videos

    • Activities

    • Teacher guidance hosted on DIKSHA

This strengthened classroom–digital integration.
